Developer Steve Witkoff offers an opinion before you have finished your sentence. It was at a fundraiser he hosted on October 23rd for Bill de Blasio at his Upper East Side townhouse that he offered to fund the Charles Street Association holiday reception, before I could fully ask.
Some months before, when I started to say something about Bill de Blasio, he interrupted with his concerns about the candidate. So, it was with some surprise and yes, cynical thoughts, I was invited to his fundraiser as de Blasio pushed 40 points in front of his rival.
What I learned was that Witkoff had had a private sit down with de Blasio and they had become pals. As Steve explained to the standing throng, he came to believe de Blasio means what he says; later de Blasio offered that he would listen when he is wrong.
As I waited for the car service Witkoff so generously offered, he answered my cynical thoughts that he was not backing de Blasio for any thought of gain and reassured me he would help in the fight to return a hospital.
The best laugh of the evening came as Witkoff introduced de Blasio as our next Mayor.
