A NEW ARRIVAL On December 1st, across from the former site of St. Vincent’s Hospital, the long awaited AIDS Memorial was finally unveiled – temporarily, at least. For then, the fence around it was back, until its large granite benches could be installed – hopefully by the end of the month.
A SURVIVOR’S CELEBRATION After D’Agostino’s close call last summer, it was only fitting that they celebrate their lucky save (Thank you, Mr. Catsimatidis) with a suitably festive Christmas mural, especially since the creator of this spectacular piece works right there. His name is Sam Mercado, and he is the store’s own Deli Chef. And on special occasions, they even loan him out to decorate other D’Agostino branches. (Apparently, he can also do tattoos should the need arise!)
AND A FOND FAREWELL To Mr. Martinez, for over 17 years a friendly face at the Hudson Street Post Office. On December 23rd, as I finished my stamp purchase, he suddenly took my hand – not, as I expected, to say Merry Christmas, but to announce, with a cheery smile, “This is my last day…I’m retiring!’ So, with a hearty handshake, we wished each other ‘Good Luck.’ And then, on behalf of us all, “We’ll miss you,” I said.
