On December 1st, with Council Member Corey Johnson and Mayor Bill de Blasio among the many speakers in attendance, the long awaited AIDS Memorial, across from the former site of St. Vincent’s Hospital, was finally unveiled though only temporarily, as it turned out. For afterwards, to everyone’s surprise, the fence around it was in place again. However, the good news from the AIDS Memorial Organization is that, after large granite benches (arriving the week of December 19th) are installed, the Memorial will again be open to be public at the end of the month, taking its rightful place as a part of “The New York City AIDS Memorial Park at St. Vincent’s Triangle.” Photos and text by Maggie Berkvist.
