I’m amazed at the new low to which St. Luke’s School has sunk tonight, Saturday, September 17th. As if the church couldn’t do anything more distasteful than sacrificing its own historic buildings and the landmark neighborhood to tacky glass luxury condos, tonight the St. Luke’s School is renting out its playground to an obnoxious crowd for what appears to be a New Rich Parents’ Dance Party, armed with rows of stadium-style loudspeakers blasting music at foundation-shattering levels from the church grounds.
Apparently ignoring the Chelsea bombing despite cell phones flickering the emergency alerts, the crowd parties on at St. Luke’s, carefree and apparently confident that the babysitter will calm the fears of the kids they left at home. On the sidewalk nearby, we can’t hear ourselves talk when we walk across Hudson Street. The music even drowns out the sirens of ambulances racing to the scene of the explosion. As the hours go by, the noise level remains exactly the same and far louder than any party or parade I’ve witnessed in the Village in over 20 years. But no one leaves and the party rocks on past 11pm, then midnight.
It makes me wonder how some people have still not learned one basic fact from Donald Trump; that is, that no matter how rich someone is, no one can buy “classy.” Quite the contrary, with speakers blasting a full two-block radius into oblivion, rattling the foundations of the buildings that St.Luke's claims to want to protect to justify selling out to the condos, this is clearly flagrant disregard for such simple human courtesy as “Do unto others as you would have others do unto you.” I’d like to ask for the addresses of these rude and thoughtless partiers so that we, their respectful Village neighbors, might appropriately return the favor by blasting music under their windows late tonight.
