Doctor Kenneth Davis, who heads Mount Sinai Hospital, has agreed to a public meeting Thursday, October 27th at the Mount Sinai Beth Israel Campus.
This meeting is in response to the demands of local politicians and community leaders.
Dr. Davis' plan is to eventually close Mount Sinai and sell the real estate for $500 million dollars. It is offered that this money will be used to open storefront urgent care offices in the cachement area now being serviced by Mount Sinai and to enlarge the Phillips Ambulatory Center on 14th Street and Park Avenue.
To replace the Trauma I Emergency Room being lost, Dr. Davis offers to substitute the 830-bed Mount Sinai with a 70-bed hospital on a parking lot owned by Mount Sinai on 13th Street east of 2nd Avenue.
Dr. David Kaufman, former head physician at St. Vincent's, argues that a new hospital should be built in the West Village/Chelsea area. He has offered several locations, starting with the three-block long St. John's Terminal complex now slated to have 1,500 apartments, and possibly a hotel.
Dr. Kaufman's recent suggestion is to enlarge the Cancer Center on 15th Street, between 8th and 9th Avenues, by leasing space from Google, which now owns the former Port Authority building in which the Cancer Center is lodged.
He also suggests that the Cancer Center be re-created on a relatively small 13th Street plot and converted into a full hospital of 300 beds.
