Joy’s Senior Seasonal Nutrition Buy of the Month

By Joy Pape

As vegetables and fruits come into season, they offer seniors the tastiest and most nutritional buys for their money.

October’s harvest is plentiful. It includes some of my favorites such as: green beans, brussels sprouts, kale, broccoli, cauliflower, corn, tomatoes, kale, and of course pumpkin. Fruits in season are apples and raspberries; choose those that are especially deep in color. The more colorful they are, generally, the healthier they are.

Take special advantage by buying those whose harvest ends in October. These are: green beans, corn, eggplant, tomatoes, and pumpkins. This is also the last month for apples and raspberries.

All vary in price, but they should be cheaper as the harvest ends. Buy them now, eat fresh, and then can or freeze some for the winter!

Next month I’ll share tips for you for healthy and happy holidays. Until then…ENJOY!
