WHAT’S IN A NAME: There is an ongoing discussion about what to name the “Triangle” park on Greenwich Avenue between 11th and 12th Streets. When the future of the old St. Vincent’s Hospital campus, including the triangle, was being negotiated half a dozen years ago, a commitment was given to the Sisters of Charity that the hospital would be memorialized in the name of the park. The park will also be the home of the New York City AIDS Memorial, currently under construction in the apex of the triangle and scheduled for a summer opening. A CB2 hearing on the naming was scheduled for March 2nd, then rescheduled to April, and then abruptly cancelled. When contacted, CB2 said that a decision on what to name the park would be made by the Parks Department. The AIDS Memorial organization has called on its members to “Please join us as we call for this park to be forever named, The New York City AIDS Memorial Park.” And the Parks Department has received a number of such letters. But many in the West Village believe that the park should be more inclusively named to commemorate St. Vincent’s Hospital’s 160 years of service to the Village as a whole.
