On Thursday, November 12th the Village Independent Democrats had their monthly meeting in St. John’s Church on Christopher Street. The meeting was chaired by long time member Katharine Wolpe. There were reports and updates on a variety of club activities including Democratic party election planning, a presidential candidates forum at the SVA theater on November 1st, affordable housing law reform, lobbying for the Small Business and Jobs Survival Act now being considered by the City Council, and the recent veto by Governor Cuomo of the Port Ambrose Liquid Natural Gas facility.
The members passed resolutions on the Voter Empowerment Act to automatically register New Yorkers when they turn 18 years old (unanimous) and another sponsored by New Yorkers for a Human Scaled City to address overdevelopment of the city (overwhelmingly).
The main speaker was Evie Litwok whose topic was What I Learned in Prison—and Wish I Hadn’t which addressed prison reform and needs of individuals after they served their sentences and were trying to readjust to independent living.
