When Grover Cleveland was president, this is what West Street looked like—now known as the West Side Highway, New York State Route 9A, Joe DiMaggio Highway and the Henry Hudson Parkway (North of 72nd Street) This roadway was always a vital thoroughfare of industry, connecting to serve sail and steam ships along the piers, ports and terminals of the Hudson River. Looking north to Tribeca, Soho, Chelsea and further we can clearly see the evolution from old to new. The landscape has been marked by tremendous changes and forged by modern transportation needs. The added tons of landfill created more real estate to Manhattan’s west side including Battery Park City and Hudson River Park. The road is still as busy and important today as it was then.
