On Thursday August 13th, the Village Independent Democrats held their monthly meeting in St. John’s Church on Christopher Street. Club president Nadine Hoffman and district leader Keen Berger reported on a variety of local political issues along with updates on Democratic Party endorsements and issues. Tony Hoffman reported on petitioning for judicial delegate and county committee candidates in an upcoming September Democratic primary.
A wide variety of resolutions were considered. These included resolutions opposing Congress’s attempt to stop Genetically Modified Organism labeling of foods (passed unanimously), supporting a New York City resolution banning non-therapeutic use of antibiotics (passed unanimously), opposing re-licensing of Indian Point nuclear reactors (passed overwhelmingly), and supporting the Iranian Nuclear deal (passed overwhelmingly).
There were updates on club activities related to the AIM gas pipeline near Indian Point, an upcoming forum on fossil fuels and global warming, support for small businesses, support for a Stonewall National Park, a demonstration for Candles for Clemency, and an outreach to new young members.
