Kumiko Nakayama Geraerts’ creations daringly combine Provencal boutis and Japanese textile art. Totally enamored with vintage textiles, she uses both of these solid traditions as her sources of inspiration, without sticking to them too closely, to design finely embroidered accessories.

Boutis has its roots in stitching, embroidery and quilting techniques that have been practiced in the workshops of Marseille, France, since the 13th century. The beauty of a Boutis work comes from the originality of its design, the richness of its motifs and the delicacy of its execution.

In June Kumiko will be in New York teaching classes on her technique at The City Quilter. Her classes have filled, but they are taking names for a wait list in case any of the registered students drop out. For more information, contact Cathy Izzo at The City Quilter.
