SPECIAL PRESS INVITATION
INTERNATIONALLY ACCLAIMED “SWAMP JUICE” OPENS DECEMBER 2 AT BARROW STREET THEATRE
6-WEEK ENGAGEMENT FROM NOV 28 TO JAN 4 IS CREATOR JEFF ACHTEM’S OFF-BROADWAY DEBUT
Dear George:
Jeff Achtem’s wildly inventive “Swamp Juice,” the Edinburgh Total Theatre Award-winning shadow puppet show, plays the Barrow Street Theatre in a limited 6-week run from Friday November 28 to Sunday January 4, 2015. The North American premiere of the internationally acclaimed “Swamp Juice” will play 32 performances, with an opening set for Tuesday December 2 at 7:30pm. The special holiday run marks the Melbourne Australia-based Achtem’s official Off-Broadway debut.
Conceived and created by Achtem, who also stars, “Swamp Juice” introduces us to an enchanting cast of characters inhabiting a strange world that could be described as a mash-up of South Park, Dr. Seuss and Charles Dickens. A virtual whirligig of motion, crazed sound effects and otherworldly dialogue, Achtem stirs up his delicious brew right before our eyes, in front of a bare lightbulb. At the show’s remarkable finale, retro 3-D glasses allow audience members to virtually leap into the world of the shadow puppets.
Members of the press can come out of the shadows for the following performances:
Saturday November 29 at 2:30pm
Saturday November 29 at 7:30pm
Sunday November 30 at 5pm
Monday December 1 at 7:30pm
Tuesday December 2 at 7:30pm (opening night)
Seen in Tokyo, London, Edinburgh, Adelaide and Sydney, “Swamp Juice” received the Total Theatre Award at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2011. It has completed tours of the UK, Germany, Holland, and Dubai. “Swamp Juice’s” original score is composed by David Henry, Nick Carver and Tristan Kelley.
During the run, Achtem, whose Bunk Puppets is based out of Melbourne, will also offer a number of hands-on workshops for parents (and their children) on how to turn the junk around your house into gorgeously filigreed shadow puppets. Achtem is originally from British Columbia and first made his puppetry mark in Montreal. His breakout production, “Sticks Stones Broken Bones,” was seen briefly at the Barrow Street Theatre in 2010.
