The day after this Science from Away column was submitted to the editor of the WestView for publication in the August issue, an article appeared online in the July 17 issue of the New York Times entitled: 2 in Florida Said to Catch Fever Found in Tropics, confirming that the first cases of chikungunya fever have appeared in the United States. Neither victim of the disease had been anywhere where the infection is found, confirming that someone returning from a place where the disease is encountered carried the virus, which was then transmitted to Florida mosquitoes.
