New Year’s greetings to WestView News readers. I would like to share with you the contents of a letter I just sent to our mayor elect, Bill deBlasio:

“As I’m sure you are aware, the courageous defense attorney, Lynne Stewart (#53504-054 Compassionate Release)was charged with the violation of unconstitutional restrictions known as SAMS, which calls for attorneys to agree to not disseminate information pertaining to their clients. While prosecutors may disseminate information about their cases to the press and other media, defense attorneys are denied the same right. In 2009, after a highly publicized series of legal battles, Ms. Stewart was sentenced to ten years in prison.

None other than Ramsey Clark has spoken out publicly against her conviction, declaring her innocence. The former attorney general said that Ms. Stewart didn’t do anything he hasn’t done himself a hundred times—and would do again—on behalf of his clients.

Under the 1984 Sentencing Act, at the request of the prisoner, the Bureau of Prisons can file a motion for compassionate release due to “extraordinary and compelling” circumstances. As Lynne Stewart is suffering from stage-four breast cancer that has spread throughout her body, I am certain her current situation more than meets these requirements.

Therefore I am asking you, Mr. de Blasio, as the mayor elected to bring our city together, tocall for the immediate release of Lynne Stewart to the loving care of her family, where she can receive the integrative healthcare her family understands is her only and best hope. Please speak out on Ms. Stewart’s behalf. Denying her compassionate release is state-sanctioned murder!”

The campaign to free Lynn Stewart calls on all of us, her fellow New Yorkers and supporters of justice, to call/write other government representatives who have the power to release Lynne before she dies in prison. Call/writein reference to Lynne Stewart, #53504-054 Compassionate Release:
