There was a moment, a day in a year, long ago and unrecalled, when my acquaintance with WestView News blossomed into a relationship.
The house must have been quiet or perhaps I’d stolen time on a subway to finally and at last read cover to cover the small, but powerful newspaper that arrived on my doorstep once a month. I typically scooped it up and carried it with me until I had a moment to read some of it. Often it went from purse to bag, to another bag, the edges becoming more tattered, frayed and torn before I had time to examine its contents. However, I never tossed it; my instinct strongly suggesting it was worth the extra minimum weight. Yet up to that point, I don’t think I’d ever allowed myself the luxury of reading any newspaper cover to cover; not since I became a mother.
I think what struck me then, those many years ago and today remains, just some of its many virtues, was how beautifully and completely the paper talked about our neighborhood, as well the paper’s ability to be both intimate and overtly political.
I count on Westview News for comprehensive coverage of local affairs. From serious and life altering topics, such as the closing of St.Vincent’s Hospital or issues related to schools and building development, to a restaurant review or the wonderful photos of a cross Street from 100 years ago, placed side by side with a photo of its contemporary life.
I know I will get a sense of local sentiment over rent increases, shuttering of smaller businesses and how to get involved in community affairs. Not to go unmentioned of course is the uncompromising coverage of politics. All of it. Local and upstate.
I know when I read the last word of the last article, I will be more informed and better connected to the streets where I live and people with whom I’m fortunate enough to share them.
So, congratulations to the tireless, indefatigable, and singular George Capsis for all his efforts and his unyielding commitment to his community and his devoted perusal of “the story.”
