Dear Editor,
After my article entitled ‘Whatever Happened to the Village Voice?’ was published in the August 2013 edition of Westview News, I found myself deluged with emails, telephone calls, and endless voice messages. It seemed everyone had an opinion and something more to add. Most felt it was time for this Voice mess to be addressed and the article went as they say, viral. The responses included thanks from Tim McDarrah, son of the legendary Voice photographer of yore Fred McDarrah; Michael Musto said it was ‘great’ and immediately put it up on his Facebook page; Legs McNeil and Gillian McCain authors of the bestselling book Please Kill Me, an account of the Punk Revolution, put it on their Kill Me’ Blog; Michael Riedel of the NY Post, the chief Voice theater critic Michael Feingold, who was laid off along with Musto and others; Clayton Patterson and Lincoln Anderson, writers for The Villager, former Voice editor and writer Ali Anderson; a group of college professors including University of Missouri and University of Nebraska and my good friend Prof. George Chauncey, Head of the History Department at Yale University. Best of all, top Voice critic Michael Smith sent a historic account and ‘go-for-it’ messages. What fun and excitement; and calls and emails are still pouring in. Word is that the editors and powers that be at the Voice are pissed off.
