On July 22 in a Crain’s Business online bulletin reporting on an MTA listing of city train and bus services to be reinstated, was a note that “Three bus lines in Brooklyn …. will be restored, as will weekend service of the M8 bus across lower Manhattan” – a piece of excellent news for the neighborhood that an upbeat newsletter from Assemblywoman Deborah Glick confirmed. Her not-quite-so-good news was that “the MTA has pledged to return this service within the next 12 months but I will encourage them to start it as soon as possible.”
A request to the MTA for comment was not returned but in a call to Ms. Glick’s office we learned that that was where things still stood as of the end of the month. Asked how this welcome turnaround had been accomplished,a staff member suggested“a campaign of persistent pestering by our elected officials”!
Thank you, elected officials. Here’s to the success of further persistent pestering.
P.S. Another MTA project for West Villagers to keep in mind is the plan for an additional bus route up the far west side. After the CB2 meeting in March it was agreed the MTA would take into consideration the Board’s recommendations for revisions to the route. This week, Speaker Quinn’s office received the Authority’s suggested changes, which will no doubt be up for further review at the CB2 meeting in September. WestViewNews will keep you posted.
