WestView Letter May 2013: The Lighter Side of Running for Mayor

The Lighter Side of Running for Mayor

Dear Editor

It was just a few nights before my 20 month odyssey of running for New York City Mayor was about to end because I had a business opportunity I couldn’t afford to pass up.

I was scheduled to be a guest the following morning on the “Curtis Sliwa Radio Show.” Speaking at mayoral forums and appearing on radio and TV talk shows was becoming my strong suit and I looked forward to my last hurrah on Sliwa’s show.

But as I glanced down at my Blackberry after emerging from an awards dinner that my newspaper, City and State, produced to honor the top women in civic life, I saw an email message from Sliwa’s producer that summed up my soon-to-be aborted campaign.

“Because of the new Pope, You’re Re-Scheduled for Friday.”

Nine words that will perhaps become the title of my book proposal on the lighter side of running for Mayor of New York.

My response, “If it had been for a cardinal or bishop, I may have been insulted.”
