Why Should I Pay for a Park?
Dear Editor,
A Neighborhood Improvement District (NID) is proposed by for the Hudson River Park, from Chambers Street to 59th Street. I have attended meetings and studied information about the NID.
As a homeowner within its proposed boundaries, I certainly appreciate and use the park, without question. Since moving here 3 years ago, I have had many encounters with people also sharing the park, and without exception, they are pleasant. I talk to people, and am told where they live. I am confidant to say that 9 out of 10 are not residents of the immediate area (of the NID).
I do not begrudge sharing the park. All users should consider how they may help support the parks in our city. It is ludicrous to have a park in our city that is not supported by all residents of the city. What other fair way is there?
In comparing this NID to other BID’s (Business Improvement District) in the city, promoters say that local residents in the NID receive a service in exchange for a fee. But that service is provided to all, since it is free for all. They also say that local home or business owners would benefit indirectly by increased property values. I can tell you that the value already increased before I bought, so I’ve already paid the premium of the park’s presence.
What do we call a tax that is targeted to a small group? Unfair!
Please vote to stop this new tax.
Thank you.
