She was a big favorite with everyone familiar with George Bliss’s Hudson Urban Bicycles on Charles Street. If George was there, Scout was there, ‘supervising’ the operation, graciously socializing with all who came by or taking time off to relax in one of the orange DoubleDutchBikes carriers. So it came as a shock to learn, in late January, that “our” favorite dog would no longer be there to greet us, prompting immediate cries of “Oh, No!” as the sad news passed from neighbor to neighbor.
When WestView News called George to offer condolences, we asked if he would like to give us a few words about his old friend; and this is what he wrote:
“People have been so kind. They’ve brought us pictures of Scout and shared tears with me and the HUB staff. I just want to say that Scout was, in a way, the heart of our neighborhood. In a place full of dogs and dog lovers, she was the one the dogs came to see, the dog lovers as well, and also the children. Parents brought their children because the children asked to come and visit her. She was so gentle with them, and even though she was a pit bull, the parents could tell there was no need to be nervous and would let their children play with this amazing dog. As one neighbor said, it was part of being fabulous that she hid her cancer till the very end. ‘She was stupendous’ said Robert the dog walker. All who new her are blessed to have known such a great being.”
