My Sandy experience is unusual because I endured its effects in Beijing, China. But my son, Matt, was living in the family compound in Westbeth and previously had a generously equipped studio in the basement.

Being a sailor, forever observing and analyzing storms, my concerns began on the 26th when I sent an email to Matt to get ready to bring his expensive equipment up to our 3rd floor apartment while the elevators were still working and the going was good.

Does anyone know a post-teen that listens to his worry-wart father?

My emails got increasingly frantic, but like everyone else, he waited until the last moment, carrying his stuff by hand (no electricity, no elevators). For most occupants in the basement, it was a total loss…hundreds of thousands of dollars of equipment and art.

You-all should listen to a sailor!
