Recognizing the union of Greenwich House and the Caring Community in Supporting Seniors
Over cocktails, dinner, musical entertainment and a live auction, guests will gather at the Tribeca Rooftop on October 15, 2012 in celebration of those who have helped to provide thousands of New York City seniors with vital health and wellness programs. The evening venerates the union of two long-standing traditions of excellence in senior services: Greenwich House and The Caring Community.
The event, which had been held for more than 15 years through The Caring Community, recognizes those who have helped to ensure our senior community remains healthy and vibrant. Under the management of Greenwich House, the former Caring Community centers have remained open and thriving. Event honorees include New York State Senator Thomas K. Duane; Deborah McManus and the DJ McManus Foundation; and the First Presbyterian Church in New York City. Scheduled to present the award to Senator Duane is New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn.
“I am proud to be recognized at the senior gala and stand behind Greenwich House as it works to provide continuous services for our seniors. By supporting these programs, we help to build a stronger community and ensure a brighter future for all New Yorkers,” Senator Duane remarked.
In keeping these centers open and preserving and expanding their programs, Greenwich House is able to serve almost 20 percent of the seniors living in lower Manhattan. One center member remarked, “I enjoy the classes that we have at the center that keep us in good shape. Thanks to Greenwich House, we are able to enjoy a variety of fun activities each day with friends.”
Funds raised at the gala will support vital health and wellness programs at the four senior centers. Classes range from “Brainercise” and Shakespeare to Tai Chi and Chinese Calligraphy, and often there are special opportunities for cultural outings to Broadway shows and local art galleries. Mental health and assistance programs like Daily Money Management and the Senior Health and Consultation Center are effective alternatives for institutionalization, helping seniors remain healthy and happy in their homes for as long as possible. For many who utilize these services, Greenwich House is a lifeline for survival.
