“You made the Post again,” offered Bobb Goldstein and indeed I was in the Sunday August 9th edition with the headline “Newspaper apologizes for calling Obama the N-word in headline” and then began the article with “The blowhard publisher of a West Village who headlined a July opinion piece about President Obama finally apologized last week-sort of.”
“ ‘I should have never allowed that title – that word to be printed- that word is the most offensive in the American language,’ ” writes George Capsis, 86, using the fully spelled out word seven times in the meandering mea culpa dryly headlined “I Apologize.”
Of course the Post knows how to write headlines and I quoted one in my article “COCK’S GOING LIMP” referring to impotent roosters but that is not what got the Post mad enough to call me a “blowhard.” It was is my repeating the criticism for their filling the front page with a photo of a man about to be killed by an on-coming subway car and for the photographer just clicking away rather than rushing to save him. The head of the Press Photographers offered, “The New York Post is not known for its subtlety in taste decisions.”
It is, I suppose, a complement when the Post gets so spluttering mad they resort to name calling or this: “Capsis then recounts his 15 minutes of fame recalling how his website received more than 100,000 hits after the incendiary headline – first reported last month by the Post went viral. His phone went off the hook he says from readers offering encouragement.”
The Post this morning devotes 16 pages to sports and 15 to “news” with such items as “BRA BABE’S SLUM FIGHT,” with a picture of the protagonist in her bra in an article about subletting her apartment to an unhappy renter.
My first “You made the Post” was when my handyman Jorge dropped it on my desk and confessed that his newly graduated and working on Wall Street son said “Pop you got to stop reading this rag.”
