What happened? Pier 45 has two beautiful shaded dias areas intended for 5-6 tables they once had – welcoming families to picnic, students to study, seniors to sit resting, chatting, watching the birds… but gradually, every single table has been taken away by the commercial Hudson Park Cafe – so that now those spacious dais’ stand foolishly vacant – shaded slabs of concrete floor welcoming… who?
While, adding to this vision of cynical exclusion, the prices at the cafe exclude the vast majority of park users – no working class family can picnic there.
Pier 45: civic beauty with a bitter after-taste
