Following Anthony Weiner’s latest scandal, Public Advocate Bill de Blasio has risen to second place in the Democratic primary for mayor, according to a new poll from Quinnipiac University.
Council Speaker Christine Quinn is in first place with 27%, followed by Mr. de Blasio with 21%, former Comptroller Bill Thompson with 20%, Mr. Weiner with 16%, and Comptroller John Liu with just 6%.
“With six weeks to go, anything can happen, but it looks like former Congressman Anthony Weiner may have sexted himself right out of the race for New York City mayor,” said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.
Quinnipiac also asked whom voters would support if Mr. Weiner drops out, and in that case Ms. Quinn gets 30%, Messrs. Thompson and de Blasio 25% each and Mr. Liu 9%.
Mr. Weiner is down to 24% in the black vote from 31% in Quinnipiac’s poll last week. Mr. Thompson, the lone black candidate in the race, gets 22% of the black vote, with 21% for Ms. Quinn and 16% for Mr. de Blasio. From the white voters, only 7% support Mr. Weiner, down from 23% last week.
