Perhaps the hottest seat in the City Council is that which Chris Quinn is vacating as she runs for mayor. Right now, the strongest contender for that seat is activist attorney Yetta Kurland.

Yetta linked herself to Dr. David Kaufman, the 30 year St. Vincent’s physician who led the fight to keep or replace a hospital on the west side of downtown Manhattan and she has vowed that she will continue the fight as council member. Her current opposition is Corey Johnson, Chairperson of Community Board 4, and Alexander Meadows, member of Community Board 2.

The big question is whether Andrew Berman, who heads the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation, will run. Easily conversant and articulate with the legal and bureaucratic constraints on land marking, he has used the internet to effectively champion conservation. With a continuing flood of handsome graphic postings attracting funding and support, he can turn out hundreds for a rally with a few email requests.

Berman has admitted to this WestView reporter that he will be a candidate for the Quinn seat, but has not decided on an announcement date. In the meantime, he effectively uses the GVSHP causes to promote his name.
