TAVERN ON JANE

When I crave unique, inventively prepared fresh food and flawless drinks, I head for Tavern on Jane at 31 Eighth Avenue (corner of Jane Street), West Village. They’ve been tantalizing patrons since 1995. This moderately priced New American restaurant/bar draws mostly locals, as well as tourists visiting the trendy, charm-laden neighborhood.
ToJ is located in a historic landmarked building, completed circa 1842. It originally served as paddocks for Sir Lord Abingdon’s horse carriages—thus its distinct “L” shape. A bakery was the first in a succession of food establishments on the ToJ site, last home to Jane Street Seafood Cafe. Jane Street was named for Sir Lord Abingdon’s daughter.
The decor today includes a wall of oil canvases depicting Jane Street scenes and other nearby vistas. Check out the cozy back dining room, which is also available for private events for up to 25 people. A savory brunch or dinner could be the peanutty “Asian Chicken Salad” with avocado, mango and cold sesame noodles. Blueberry pancakes (with bacon or sausage) evoke memories of a Maine B&B. For dinner: “Osso Bucco” or a “Yellow Fin Tuna Club” sandwich works for me. My favorite dessert is the “Caramel Apple Crumb Cake,” served a la mode with caramel sauce and a hint of cinnamon. An attentive, friendly and happy staff, along with engaging owner Michael Stewart, dote on customers. Enjoy the generous portions and the recurring menu surprises such as banana pudding (now!). Reservations are accepted for parties of five or more.
