A 6 Session Course Taking Place Thursdays, February 4, 11, 18, 25 March 3 and 10, 6 pm to 7:30 pm
In the wake of the global financial crisis, questions about the functioning of our economic system are as relevant as ever. Especially in New York City, home to Wall Street and the Occupy Movement, it is clear that capitalism is among the most exciting and controversial topics. This is why, for the first time, the Jefferson Market Branch of The New York Public Library will offer a free 6 week course entitled “Introduction to Political Economy and Economics.” Classes meet Thursday at 6pm beginning February 4th.
This course will explore the economy and related political controversies through the lens of economic theory. In contrast to typical introductory-level economics classes, students will be exposed to a number of intellectual traditions, including classical, neoclassical, and Keynesian perspectives. Students will develop an understanding of the complexity of economic questions and their relevance to real world problems and policies.
While offering a global focus, the course is homegrown in the Village. The main text for the course will be The Worldly Philosophers: The Lives, Times, and Ideas of The Great Economic Thinkers, by Robert L. Heilbroner (available at the Library at sign up) who studied and taught at the New School for Social Research, located nearby. The New School for Social Research is renowned for its “heterodox” or pluralist economics department.
The Professor: Katherine Moos is a PhD Student at the New School for Social Research and Visiting Faculty at Sarah Lawrence College. She holds a MA in Economics from the New School for Social Research
