Euthanasia is a Greek word from “eu” meaning “good” and “thanatos,” which is “death”, and in ancient Greece there was an acceptance that if a child was born deformed or crippled that it was best to put it to death.
We Americans don’t believe in euthanasia, so we have a growing population of the mentally ill, drug addicts, alcoholics, severely crippled, AIDs patients, senile and the autistic that until now have lived to the end of their lives expensively (to the taxpayer) in and out of hospitals, institutions and prisons.
In 2005 conservative and very Republican Utah did something astonishing—they put them into homes of their own and saved a lot of money.
They eliminated the cost of homeless shelters, emergency room visits, ambulance picks ups, and police calls.
And as of yesterday, the de Blasio administration is doing the same—they have announced that they will build 15,000 units of what they call “supportive” housing which means apartments for people who may never be able to get and hold a job in their entire lives.
The mayor’s press release offers, “clients placed in supportive housing use Medicaid, psychiatric institutions, jail and shelters less than clients who were not placed” (that sounds believable).
The mayor’s office offers that this will cost $2.6 billion which I find does not mean very much today—it is only 2 and half billionaires.
The Times article offers the administration’s argument that you can’t reduce or end homelessness if you continue to open temporary shelters nor can you do it by paying landlord rent with vouchers.
This all sounds like Democratic Socialism.
