Want to make some money? I bet that Eliot Spitzer will be our next City Comptroller. Yet I doubt if you will be able to find somebody to take the bet.

What surprised me was Spitzer’s resignation as Governor of New York State after The Times printed details of his visits to Emperors Club VIP, a very expensive East Side prostitution service; his subsequent resignation as Governor was all of five years ago. Wow! – time flies!

Every time I would see an impatient Eliot as a political commentator on our modest neighborhood Channel 1, above the Chelsea Market, all I could do was think of his exotic indulgences. It was difficult – very difficult – to concentrate on his political insights which were, by the way, not bad.

Now I suppose you want to know why I am so sure he will be our next comptroller? Simple – name recognition.

How I wish I could afford to hire the Marist College to do a survey about exactly what happens in the voting booth when we are at last confronted with only names. In those few minutes while people are waiting outside, we have to vote – and vote fast! Yes, we quickly vote for names we recognize no matter their sexual indulgencies (if indeed we can remember them – “is this the guy who did what?”).

It is true that we don’t like political grafters, but even Jimmy Carter admitted to mentally undressing and hence committing “adultery in my heart.”

The Times quotes Spitzer recounting a woman coming up to him and complimenting him on his work for the homeless and observing, “Nobody is perfect.”

Born the recipient of a real estate fortune, he could and did, as New York State Attorney General, take Wall Street on. He offered in The Times interview that he will revive it since as comptroller, he will be looking into how Wall Street invests the billions of city funds. Oh Wall Street hates him and that alone will buy him some votes.

He will be running against our now Manhattan Boro President Scott Stringer who, until now, was a shoo-in. However, if you have a choice of voting for a former Attorney General Governor or a Boro President, well, there is no contest.

So Elliot Spitzer is our next comptroller and after that and the redemption it affords who knows, mayor, governor, the first Jewish president.

( hey look what Clinton did under the desk and if he could run again he would be the next president and not Hillary – these are new times – new times).
