Bookbook at 266 Bleecker Street will be closing its doors this May. We have been doing this for 35 years and it’s time for a road trip. In 1984, we opened our first bookstore, Biography Bookshop at 400 Bleecker Street on the corner of Bleecker and 11th Streets in what was, then, a historic West Village neighborhood with a strong and deeply woven community fabric. We were welcomed with open arms and our ties to the area strengthened over the ensuing 35 years. In 2009, commercial realities of the newly-gentrifying community led to a relocation to an equally beloved home on Bleecker Street between Cornelia and Jones Street, as well as our new name, Bookbook.

We were thrilled to continue on one of the most vibrant long-standing “mom and pop” business streets in the city. Our loyal clientele from the Far West Village was joined by a wider community of people from all over the city and the world. Further commercial changes in the neighborhood, alas, have forced us to finally end this phase of our lives as booksellers.

We want to thank you (and your dogs) for being part of our community for more than three decades. And we want to thank our employees from over the years who have become part of our close circle of friends. Since April 15th we have been discounting everything in the store 20%-30% off.

Our last day of business will be May 15, 2019. While we are closing the store at 266 Bleecker Street, you can’t get rid of us that fast. On most Saturdays, we will be at the Abingdon Square Farmers Market, on the corner of Hudson and 12th Streets, with tables full of interesting books and a great selection of greeting cards. Periodically, we also plan on having tables by the pickle stand on Carmine Street, between 6th Avenue and Bleecker Street. So stop by for some pickles, prose, and plentiful conversation. No matter where we set up shop, we promise to have dog treats.

We will let you know where and when we will be selling on the street and other events via email and social media. Please follow us at and on Instagram @bookbooknyc, and join our email list at:

Keep supporting our independent bookstore friends in Greenwich Village at Unoppressive Non-imperialist Bargain Books, Three Lives & Company, Mercer Street Books, and Idlewild.
