Remember the ’60’s and ’70’s? Our generation was so powerful back then…not willing to accept that things are the way they are just because they’ve always been that way. We stood up for what we believed in and we changed the world for generations to come.
Then, we got married, settled down, had kids and lived our lives as best we could. As part of “life,” we faced the obstacles…aging parents, illnesses, financial hardships…and, by the Grace of God, we came out of it on the other end!
Now, our parents are gone, our kids are grown and many of us are retired…playing golf, having lunch with friends or, living our lives vicariously through our children and grandchildren. This is all wonderful…to have created a loving family, sharing birthdays, anniversaries, Thanksgiving and other holidays, and many other milestones.
And so now we have to ask ourselves two all-important questions: 1. “Am I happy and fulfilled?” and 2. “Have I done enough to make the positive difference?” What is the legacy you will be leaving to your children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and generations to come? Is there anything that you can do right now to extend an olive branch to make it easier for the next generations?
Think about all the wisdom you’ve attained. What about the many talents you’ve nurtured and skills you acquired? Besides passing these on to your family, is there any way you can leverage this knowledge by reaching out to your community, your city, your country or the world.
With today’s amazing technology, you don’t even have to leave your home to accomplish great things. All the tools and strategies are available at your fingertips…in an instant.
So, why not look into two possible approaches to imparting your wisdom. 1. Go into your community and work with young people in your field of expertise…volunteer, write an article or blog. 2. Get your message out there through Social Media. If you don’t know how to…then, by all means, ask your grandchildren for their help. This is their expertise. What a great exchange with your family…to come together to pool resources, talents and wisdom to make the positive difference for all generations!
So, if you’re thinking you’re “getting old” and just want to have an easy lifestyle…relax and do nothing…think again. In fact…don’t just think about it…meditate on it! No one has to remind you that our communities, our country and our world are facing enormous challenges. Our very existence, let alone our lifestyle is being threatened daily. An “I’m old…what can I do about it” laissez faire approach to what’s happening out there is unacceptable. We see it every day, how people who are experiencing the most adverse challenges life can offer, not only rise up to overcome the challenges, but become our greatest leaders.
