At least it didn’t rain this year!
There was the occasional mist and it was cold up on the BQE and the Verrazano. But Bike New York’s 40th annual TD Five Boro Bike Tour was terrific. And what a milestone for the event.
Having started in 1977 during the dark days of the City’s financial crisis—when the NY Daily News paraphrased President Ford having told the city to “Drop Dead” and Bedford Stuyvesant was looted and burned during a citywide blackout—Bike New York had just 750 students in its first ride.
These days, the ride tops out at 32,000, with participants coming from all 50 states and 43 countries. And the age range is just as broad—from three-year olds (riding in tandem) to octogenarians.
This is an annual event for everyone (who has $100 to spare).
