The blocks of Houston Street east and west of Broadway are jam-packed with construction activity. The NYU Coles Gymnasium is being displaced for an NYU classroom and multipurpose high-rise at 181 Mercer Street designed by Davis Brody Bond and KieranTimberlake. Perkins Eastman’s design for the 606 Broadway office building will front Houston and will have a narrow facade facing Broadway when complete. Between Crosby and Lafayette, there will be a new CookFox-designed condo tower facing Houston, replacing a filling station. As shown in the accompanying photo, the open views of the Puck Building will be blocked, but the streets will be enlivened by the new buildings. A major subway hub is located at this intersection and major retail shops are proliferating in the area. Photo and text by Brian J. Pape.
