Ten-year-old Athena Capsis had a request for her dad from her best pal at P.S. 41, “Heather’s father wants to use our house for a Halloween parade.” It was Heather Lee and her father, Ralph Lee, made theatrical masks and lived, and still lives, in Westbeth and he came around to explain…

“I have people in Punch and Judy costumes that will hang out the windows and surprise a children’s parade walking by.” That was 42 years ago and was the first West Village Halloween Parade.

I asked our historian Catherine Revland to ask Ralph to call and she offered, “I will slip a note under his door.” He never called. I think of that night when I watch what it has become, as they say, a tradition. It will last for centuries.
