Dear Mr. Capsis,

I hope you’re doing wonderfully on this beautiful summer day!

I’ve meant to write you this for a long time but reading the August issue of the WestView News made it an urgent matter for me. I was also under the assumption that you’d get laundry baskets full of fan mail and letters!

Your paper is the monthly I’m awaiting the most! Nothing brightens my day more than finding the newest edition in my lobby and seeing it on thresholds all over the West Village while walking my dog!

Reading it upsets me (another old store that has to close because of greedy landlords!), touches me (the story of the old lady that was luckily able to return to her apartment), excites me (another opening of a place that you recommend! another local initiative that turned out to be a success!), makes me confident (your unstoppable activism), and brings me closer to other West Village residents. I always start a conversation with someone I read about in the paper when I recognize them on the streets. So you see: a full range of emotions! No other monthly can do that!

And you also have fans in Hamburg, Germany. Whenever I go to visit my parents there, I have to bring the most recent issues with me. They know exactly what’s going on in my neighborhood, despite living almost 4,000 miles away.

I saw that you’re looking for editors and I wish I could write for you and be part of your team but I already have a full-time job as a journalist and English is only my third language. But I will stay an enthusiastic reader for as long as WestView News will be around and hopefully, that will be for many, many, more years!

Again, thank you for doing what you’re doing! Your fan, Sophie Gruetzer

$50 Donation

I recently found a $50 bill on the sidewalk on Perry Street. Since it is not mine and I have no way of finding its owner, I figure it should benefit the neighborhood. So, enclosed, you will find a donation from some unknown benefactor with my thanks for your invaluable newspaper.

Dear Merry,

Contrary to the aphorism that words alone have a lesser value, I and the people who put WestView together breathe compliments like oxygen, but your sending a found fifty dollar bill along with your kind words helps us pay for the papers we give away free to our many readers who continuously say… “I have to send George $12 for a subscription.” Subscribe online or send $12 to WestView News, 69 Charles St., New York, NY 10014.
