St. Vincent’s Dr. Kaufman Heralds New Hospital

By David L. Kaufman, M.D.

Sinai’s acquisition of Beth Israel has given us the sad opportunity to once again witness history repeating itself. It will be closed, and the real estate play is being implemented with Sinai to get hundreds of millions of dollars while New Yorkers get yet another luxury high rise.
In healthcare it’s rare to be given a second chance. But now we have it and the politicians and regulators have the precious opportunity to make lemonade from lemons. The East side of Manhattan has over 5000 hospital beds from 34th Street to 106th Street. They don’t need more. The Lower West side, with a resident and commuter population of over 1.5 million, has NO hospital beds from Canal Street to 60th Street. This community desperately needs a real hospital with real beds in real numbers supported by a real Emergency Department.
