Briefly Noted: Call Central Casting

admin 03/03/2016     Briefly Noted

In the golden era of Hollywood, MGM had “Central Casting” – an office that could, on very short notice, produce any type of actor or even performing animal a director or producer needed after exploding to a hopeless performer “You’re fired!”

The production could take a lunch break and when, in an hour, they reconvened a new actor who could not only fit into the costume of the departed one but was the exact same height so lights need not be adjusted – all would effortlessly segue into place and the production would finish right on budget.

When I started at IBM I worked for Gordon Smith who was six’ two” and very WASP handsome, and I would often say if you called central casting to replace President Thomas J. Watson Junior they would send up Gordon Smith.

But where is Central Casting when we need a new president?

I mean on the Republican side it is a frightening joke and on the Democratic side we certainly do not have a Lincoln or Washington – how did it get so bad and what, if anything, can be done about it?

OK, think about it, what kind of personality is so absolutely convinced that out of over 323 million Americans they are the one most brilliant person for whom the truth continually appears with laser-like clarity, and who can see the computer funny-business of the big banks or the high speed larceny of Wall Street and still confidently rest their thumb on the  atomic button?

Yes, well, you would have to say that this guy or gal had a very serious messianic complex and needed 6 months or more in a California rest home but OMG don’t let him or her into the oval office.

Is it because our society has lost the ability to produce god-like personalities or maybe our poor reading of history has incorrectly deified Washington and Lincoln and maybe even FDR.

But no, scientifically speaking, there must be one mind who is wiser than all of us and hence is THE mind that should lead us.

Yes, well, he or she is probably saying, “if they are ready to follow Donald Trump they are not breathing wisdom.”
