“Life or Debt” was the title of a day-long event on March 23rd, sponsored by Strike Debt, an offshoot of Occupy Wall Street, which recently raised money to abolish $1.2 million in emergency room debt, as part of a larger effort to raise awareness of the human costs of privatizing health care. The program included a morning of free healthcare advice and education at the Judson Memorial Church, followed by a Rally in Washington Square Park and a march through the area, stopping by recently closed hospitals and ending at the St. Vincent’s Hospital site, where final speakers included Yetta Kurland and Paul Newell of the Coalition for a New Village Hospital.
